Argonauts Look to Cool Off #5 Lady Blazers

first_img Share April 5, 2007PENSACOLA, Fla. – After their scheduled double header against North Alabama was rained out on Sunday, West Florida will face one of the best teams in the nation. On Friday, West Florida (23-18, 3-5 GSC) will be at conference rival and fifth-ranked Valdosta State (31-3, 10-0). The double header will begin at 4 p.m. EST.West Florida and Valdosta State both opened their conference schedule on Mar. 20 in Pensacola. In the first game, Kristina Ely’s two-run double in the top of the fourth inning gave Valdosta State a lead they would not relinquish in a 5-3 win. Brianna Collis tossed a one-hitter and struck out nine as Valdosta State completed the sweep with an 8-0 win in game two.West Florida has settled for a split in three of their first four conference double headers. Last Saturday, West Florida dropped a 4-3 decision to 13th ranked Alabama-Huntsville before responding with a 4-1 win. Ashlee Simpson (Decatur, Ala./Jefferson State CC) enters Friday’s action with a nine-game hitting streak. She leads the team with a .353 batting average and 14 multiple-hit games. In the center circle, West Florida is second in the conference with a 1.44 earned run average. Taren Walton (Pensacola, Fla./Daytona Beach CC) and Emily Burge (Pace, Fla./Pace HS) have combined to strike out a conference-high 343 strikeouts this season.Valdosta State is on a school-record 17-game winning streak. The Lady Blazers posted three shutouts last weekend in sweeping double headers from conference opponents North Alabama and Alabama-Huntsville. Valdosta State has outscored conference opponents, 57-6, this season. Kristen Lindsey is the reigning Gulf South Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week after tossing three shutouts and a one-hitter last week. Alex Acosta batted .333 with three home runs and 11 RBI last week to earn GSC East Division Player of the Week honors.West Florida leads the all-time series, 35-17.
