first_img Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Superintendent Jon R. Gundry has announced that Pasadena High School (PHS) Assistant Principal Lori Touloumian will lead the management of a $7.9 million federal grant to create magnet schools at Washington Middle School, Eliot Middle School, Washington Accelerated Elementary School and Jackson Elementary School. As magnet school coordinator, Touloumian will be responsible for the implementation of the magnet program including student recruitment, budget oversight, planning, coordination and evaluation of programs that build the four schools’ capacity for effective and engaging instruction, monitoring of desegregation efforts, and assisting in the acquisition and utilization of instructional materials.“I am pleased that Ms. Touloumian will lead the magnet program and expand high-quality options in science, technology, dual language immersion and the performing arts for Pasadena area students and families,” said Gundry. “Her energy, leadership and high expectations for students and staff, along with her proven skills in school-based grant management, make her an ideal choice for this important position.Touloumian has served as assistant principal at PHS since 2011 where she supervised student activities, student leadership groups and served as the liaison for the school’s Safe and Supportive Schools grant. Previously, she was chair and co-chair of the school’s English department from 2007-2010. She began her tenure at PHS in 1999 teaching 10th and 11th grade regular and honors English courses. In addition to her work at PHS, Touloumian has also been an Upward Bound instructor at Pasadena City College since 2001.“I am thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to serve as the new Magnet Program Coordinator and look forward to working with the teams at Washington Middle School, Elliot Middle School, Washington Accelerated Elementary School, and Jackson Elementary School,” said Touloumian. “I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work with a stellar team at Pasadena High School first as a teacher and department chair then as an administrator, an experience that I know will serve me well in years to come.”Earlier this fall, PUSD was awarded a $7.9 million three-year Magnet School Assistance Program (MSAP) grant to establish or expand magnets at four district schools that draw diverse students from throughout the community and expand public school choices for parents. Washington Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) Magnet Middle School, which opened this fall, is one of the recipients of the grant. The grant will also support the STEM focus at Washington Accelerated Elementary, STEM and Spanish dual language immersion programs at Jackson Elementary and a new visual and performing arts magnet at Eliot Middle School. All four magnet schools will use project-based learning that is integrated with the new Common Core State Standards and 21stcentury learning skills. The grant is expected to benefit almost 7,000 students in the four schools over a three-year period.
