first_img Share UWF Cross Country Teams both Finish in Top 10 at the Covered Bridge Invitational Aug. 31, 2007BOONE, N.C. – The Argo women’s Cross Country team finished 7th in the Covered Bridge Invitational in Boone, North Carolina on Friday afternoon. While Georgia won the meet with a team score of 27, and Florida State was second at 35, the Argos finished as the top D-II school of the five participating, with a team score of 209. Senior Diana Sitar was the top UWF runner in the 5k (3.1 miles) event with a time of 19:25. Susan Kuijken (Florida State) was the overall winner in 18:01.The UWF men’s Cross country team finished 8th as a team in the 8k event (5 miles), and second of the five D-II schools. Florida State won the men’s meet with a team score of 25, while Appalachian State was second at 68. The Argos team score of 236 was just behind the top D-II school Lenoir Rhyne (225). The top UWF runner was Junior Eric Mayes, who finished 52nd in 27:33. The overall winner was Mark Buckingham of Florida State, in a time of 25:34.Coach Matt Dobson thought the first meet went well for the Argos. The men were missing their top two runners, and had three Freshmen in their top five runners. “I know that we will have to rely on Freshmen this year for the men’s team, and there is no substitute for experience,” and this meet provided that with the strong D-I schools in the meet. Freshmen Reynolds Griner (68th; 28:20), Jared Black (72nd; 28:32), and Josh McEachin (77th; 28:55) were among the Argos top five runners. Junior Justin Gates was the other top Argo finisher at 73rd place in a time of 28:33.The UWF Women’s team has a little more experience, with only one Freshmen in the top five. Coach Dobson was very pleased with their performance, stating that “the girls showed they are ready to compete very well at our level (D-II).” Sitar was the leader with a very strong finish, nearly one minute better than her previous time on the Covered Bridge course, which is a challenging hilly course. Sitar finished 21st overall out of 115 runners. The other finishers for the women were; Junior Katherine Ragia (52nd; 20:33), Junior Margaret Harter (69th; 21:11), Freshmen Kelli Midden (85th; 22:02), and Senior Lindsey Failing (96th; 23:11).The other finishers for the Men’s team included; Andrew Maedel (85th; 29:26), Nick Maedel (86th; 29:38), Scott Lydick (89th; 29:49), Sean Jansen (98th; 30:57), and Tyler Sowell (107th; 32:19). 117 men finished the 8k course. The men’s and women’s Cross Country teams compete again next Friday, September 7th in the Mountain Dew Classic at Gainesville, Fla. Print Friendly Versionlast_img
