Devastating to economy“The storm is devastating to our economy. Our hotels have been damaged…. Getting those back up and running in a position where people will want to come and be tourists – will take some time,” Plaskett noted.Earlier in the day the European Union (EU) said it was in the process of mobilizing its emergency response instruments to assist countries affected or threatened by Hurricane Irma. Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful storms in history, ravaged sections of the British Virgin Islands as it ripped across the island chain late Wednesday.Images have emerged of homes being flattened and several government offices destroyed. Only hospital crippledMeanwhile, in the neighboring US Virgin Islands, its reported that the hurricane has crippled the only hospital on the island of St. Thomas.“St. Thomas and St. John are pretty devastated,” said Stacey Plaskett, the Virgin Islands’ delegate to Congress in an interview with USA Today. She said the winds ripped the rood off the Roy Schneider Medical Centre in St. Thomas and the authorities have been evacuating patients to the island of St. Croix via helicopter. She said that the 911 emergency system is down. Plaskett also said while most of the structures on the island met building codes for hurricanes, they could not withstand the strength of the storm. Saved only passportAccording to Jermaine Smith, a Jamaican living there, the only thing he managed to save was his passport. “Everything mash up, everything, nothing saved,” Smith said in a video being circulated on social media.Smith alluded to the loss of lives, but according to BVI News Online, there has been no official confirmation of deaths.“You have people in buildings die and nobody can get to them. You have cars mashed up; all the houses have been ripped to pieces. Only thing I could have saved is our passport and our lives.”
A South Florida Diaspora leader made it his business Monday, to fly to New York City to pay his final respects to the Caribbean-born co-founder of the Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill, ‘Caribbean Patty King,” Lowell Fitzgerald Hawthorne.Had to say goodbye in PersonLeo Gilling, a former Jamaica Diaspora Advisory Board Member for the West/Midwest U.S. and agency principal of Allstate Insurance in South Florida, said he had to say goodbye in person at a viewing held in Mount Vernon, NY on Monday night, Dec. 18th, since Hawthorne helped him to launch his first patty shop in Los Angeles with no upfront money.“Hawthorne will be missed,” Gilling told News Americas, adding that Hawthorne built the largest Caribbean franchise in the US competing with mega chains like McDonalds and Burger King because he “dreamed big and proved it was possible.”Thousands stand in long lineOn Tuesday, Dec. 19th, some 5,000 people stood in long lines to gain entry to the funeral service, held at the Christian Cultural Center at 12020 Flatlands Avenue in Brooklyn, NY.Many hoped to get a last glimpse of the man who created Caribbean franchise history in the US but family members kept the early morning viewing private. However, once inside, the mourners were able to read all about the Jamaican immigrant who achieved the American dream and became a self-made millionaire in the US, inside the pages of a 45-page funeral program.Local politicians joined Diaspora leaders, employees, franchise owners, friends, family and well-wishers in celebrating the life of the 57-year-old who died from a self-inflicted gunshot at his Bronx corporate headquarters on Dec. 2, 2017. His death remains a mystery even though the rumor bill has been buzzing.Family tributesBut Hawthorne’s widow, Lorna, shared her private pain with mourners, writing that his shocking suicide left her family heartbroken and grasping for answers. “Though you left us with many tears and questions-we must continue our life and will see you in paradise,” she wrote.Son Haywood Hawthorne, a vice president at Golden Krust, said his father is “now in eternal peace”, while his daughter Monique Hawthorne choked back tears as she described losing her “best friend.”Hawthorne’s two other sons, Darren and Omar, also gave moving eulogies, with Darren voicing the family’s shock over the unexpected tragedy. “I always knew the day would come when I would have to write this tribute. While I didn’t expect the day to come this early, you have instilled the principle of faith in all of your children,” he said.Tributes from Jamaican leadersFormer Jamaican Councilwoman Una Clarke spoke at the funeral and presented a proclamation from her daughter, Jamaican-American Congresswoman, Yvette Clarke, who was voting on the tax bill in Washington and could not attend. Also sending greetings was Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Jamaica’s former Prime Minister PJ Patterson.Hawthorne was born in St. Mary, Jamaica and migrated to the U.S. in 1981. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Lehman College. In 1989, he along with his wife, Lorna and four siblings pooled their money together to open the first Golden Krust retail location in Bronx, New York. They later turned the company into a franchisor of Caribbean food and pastries, and today there are over 120 restaurants in nine U.S. states. He was also an author who recently released the autobiography: ‘The Baker’s Son’; had appeared on the popular CBS show ‘Undercover Boss,’ and was a philanthropist who supported many Caribbean American causes including some 300 scholarships for students of the University of the West Indies through the American Foundation of the UWI, (AFUWI). KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz secured a surprise win to cap off their historic hosting of a Concacaf Gold Cup doubleheader with a 3-2 win over Honduras. The match, held at the National Stadium in Kingston on June 17, was the first time a Gold Cup finals match had been held in the Caribbean. A total of 17,874 spectators, many of whom came out to see Bayer Leverkusen striker Leon Bailey make his debut for the national senior team, witnessed the historic victory.Honduras went into the match as the top-ranked group seed and firm favourites. But host team Jamaica, who have been the losing Gold Cup finalists in 2015 and 2017, have a habit recently of reserving their best form for this competition. They opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Dever Orgill headed home from close range. In the 41st minute, he doubled the lead, finishing off some sharp passing inside the box by the Jamaicans. This was followed by Honduras’ first goal, scored when Alberth Elis broke free to slide a pass across goal for Antony Lozano to convert.Jamaica responded just a few minutes later with a header by Damion Lowe extending the lead to 3-1 in the 56th minute.Honduras battled on and substitute forward Rubilio Castillo pulled a goal back in stoppage time to make the final score 3-2.The Reggae Boyz are scheduled to leave the island on Tuesday at 1 pm via charter for Houston, Texas for their next game against El Salvador on Friday. The 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup is scheduled to run from June 15 to July 7. The bi-annual tournament will primarily be hosted in the United States, with Costa Rica and Jamaica also hosting doubleheaders in the first round of matches in groups B and C, respectively.

The Formula 1 is back in Monza today for the Italian GP and there are plenty emotions flying around in the Camp of the defending champion, Lewis Hamilton, after setting a new F1 qualifying record Yesterday to go past Micheal Schumacher.Championship leader, Sébastien Vettel, endured a very difficult time in the heavy rain but got a positive lift at the end ahead of the race after being promoted to start on sixth due to penalties that effectively demoted Red Bull pair Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo. It’s the Ferrari’s home grid in Italy but the Mercedes team and Force India have had the better tests and qualifying. Lewis Hamilton knows he will be top of the driver’s championship for the first time this season if he can get one over his Ferrari rival and he absolutely needs to take this chance.More pointedly for Mercedes, the race in Monza is the last high-speed track F1 will be visiting this season and with the subsequent lineup of more intricate grids, that naturally do not favour the Three Arrow till the end of the season, it is a very big chance for Lewis to get the advantage and even he knows it.“If the race is dry, and I heard that it is, it’s definitely going to help,” Hamilton said. “You’ve got the Force India and Williams that both should be quick on the straight with the Mercedes engines, and obviously Valtteri.“So hopefully it will make it a bit of a harder day for the Ferraris. But I’ve just got to look forwards and keep my foot down and just go for it.“I have no idea how it’s going to go but I’m going to try to make sure it’s one of the best days ever.”Although Mercedes and Ferrari have gone toe-to-toe throughout this season, the contrasting characteristics of their cars have brought about clear advantages for the respective cars in different circuits – Ferrari in Hungary and Monaco with Mercedes absolutely dominating at Silverstone.Singapore is next up with its tight and twisty circuit which almost certainly favours the Ferrari and Red Bull cars so the onus right now is on Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton especially to make the race in Monza, which obviously is their last clear circuit advantage, count.Provisional starting grid for the Italian GP1) Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes2) Lance Stroll, Williams3) Esteban Ocon, Force India4) Valtteri Bottas, Mercedes5) Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari6) Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari7) Felipe Massa, Williams8) Stoffel Vandoorne, McLaren9) Sergio Perez, Force India10) Daniil Kvyat, Toro Rosso11) Kevin Magnussen, Haas12) Marcus Ericsson, Sauber13) Pascal Wehrlein, Sauber14) Max Verstappen, Red Bull15) Nico Hulkenberg, Renault16) Carlos Sainz, Toro Rosso17) Daniel Ricciardo, Red Bull18) Jolyon Palmer, Renault19) Fernando Alonso, McLaren20) Romain Grosjean, HaasRelated
French giants Paris Saint Germain (PSG) showed the strength of their new team following a very impressive 3-0 thrashing of Bayern Munich in their UEFA Champions League (UCL) clash at the Parc des Princes. The hosts took an early lead through Brazilian defender Daniel Alves after he was teed up by the most expensive player in world football, Neymar. Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani added a second goal in the first half before the aforementioned Neymar wrapped up the win with a close range finish in the second half.In another huge UCL clash played on Wednesday night, substitute Michy Batshuayi scored a late goal to hand Chelsea a 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid in what was their first European game at the stadium they now call home (Estadio Metropolitano).Atletico took a first half lead courtesy Antoine Griezmann’s penalty after David Luiz was penalised but the English champions produced an excellent second half display to overturn the result. New summer signing Alvaro Morata equalised for the Blues before Batshuayi’s late show.Another English side in Manchester United also recorded an away victory after a 4-1 win at CSKA Moscow. Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku continued his fine goal scoring form with two goals to take his tally for the season to 10 goals. Share Golden Race’s virtual sports products get Swedish certification June 18, 2020 The industry wakes up to virtual sports potential June 26, 2020 Submit StumbleUpon Golden Race gains ISO certification May 29, 2020 Share Related Articles Martin Wachter, Golden RaceMartin Wachter, the CEO at Golden Race, is getting ready for the biggest industry event of the year. However, he took some time out of his busy schedule to speak to SBC News about his preparation for ICE 2017 (February 7-9), where to find him in the London ExCeL and his excitement over sharing details of the company’s new online and mobile platforms. How I prepare for ICEMW: Last year was an extremely busy year for us all, however we started talking about ICE 2017 at least six months ago. It’s the biggest event of the year, and we enjoy and value being there not only to showcase ourselves and what we do, but also to network and share excitement for new possibilities.Last year we launched Real Fighting at ICE, which was shortlisted for various awards around the world until we went on to win an award from SBC in December. This year is less about a specific product and more about a general presentation of everything we offer. Many of our products and platforms have had a lot of behind the scenes work done, in some cases entirely renewed, and we plan to present them all together to cement our position as industry leaders. What I am doing at ICE 2017MW: I have a number of meetings already booked – it will be busy for sure! My time will be mostly with new customers – people just love what we offer, and demonstrating the value that Golden Race can provide them is at the core of ICE for me.While it is nice to see competitors and what they are doing, and I will of course take a look around, my focus is the same as Golden Race’s focus: delivering the winning solutions which operators demand. What I’m looking forward to at ICE 2017MW: The exhibition is where the magic begins, although the networking and parties are a great opportunity to really connect with customers. For the exhibition, I am looking forward to people’s reactions to our new online and mobile platforms – our complete sportsbook with virtual results, available everywhere, 24/7.We have had such great response already to that – it’s a beautiful but simplistic platform, and we will be expanding it more in the future – and although our cage fighters last year did attract a huge crowd, I look forward to the same from our products themselves.Where you will usually find me at ICEMW: We will be at stand S2-322 during the days – come and see us, our stand design this year looks really great. For the evenings… really that depends on what happens each day! There is always some opportunity, and I expect I will be very busy. People who wish to speak with me should stop by to arrange a one-to-one – I am flexible and will find time for sure.Favourite ICE memoryMW: There are many good memories, but last year our Real Fighting launch with our fighters in our cage – that memory is impossible to forget, because the whole year, everywhere I travelled, people would always talk about it!The success of that cage and our fighters brought us a lot of extra attention, and led to another huge success in the conferences because of the numbers drawn by it.Typical post-ICE activityMW: We always have a huge amount work with new customers and potential customer follow-ups after shows, and we see a lot of new start-ups from any show – ICE just means that number is much bigger!I am not even sure where I will be heading exactly after ICE, but Golden Race has a lot planned this year – new products, improvements, and so much more – I will be flying somewhere to meet with either potential customers or connecting with new or existing ones. Back to work – I am always working, because I am lucky enough to love what I do.
