Transportation Ministry urges drivers to get appropriate tires for winter

first_imgWinter tires are required on many rural highways and high mountain passes in the Interior, North and the Island.Winter tires have been defined as those labelled with either the Mountain Snowflake symbol or the Mud and Snow (M+S) symbol.Signs across the province identify the highways where winter tires required, and the types of vehicle on which they are required. These signs say that both Mountain Snowflake and M+S tires are acceptable winter tires for cars and smaller trucks.Advertisement Tomorrow is October 1st, and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is reminding people that winter tire will be required for certain highways in BC as of Thursday.Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone sent out this tweet to remind drivers. Are your tires ready? #winteriscoming @TranBC http://t.co/Vlz8UYcqTY pic.twitter.com/OY9KL8sQ1U— Todd Stone (@toddstonebc) September 30, 2015- Advertisement -“It’s our annual reminder to drivers to ensure your vehicle has winter tires if you will be travelling on the designated routes, and to ensure the tires are in good condition, with appropriate traction,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone.Section 208 of BC’s Motor Vehicle Act dictates what a winter tire is and where drivers need to use these tires.Advertisement With that said, both the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and the RCMP recommend people who travel regularly on BC’s winter highways to equip their cars and light trucks with the Mountain Snowflake tire, which is the ‘best tire available.’“M+S tires are a viable and safe option for motorists who plan their trips to coincide with periods of better weather, and are prepared to drive with added care and caution if winter conditions are encountered,” Sonia Lowe with the transportation ministry said in an e-mailed statement. The ministry says drivers who don’t have the proper winter tires on their vehicle can receive a fine of $121, and drivers who don’t have the min tread depth on their tires (3.5mm) can receive a fine of $109.last_img read more
