Press release: NHS COVID-19 app launches across England and Wales

first_img The features of this app, including QR code check-in at venues, work alongside our traditional contact tracing service and will help us to reach more people quickly in their communities to prevent further spread of the virus. We are confident that every person who downloads the app will be helping to protect themselves and their loved ones. We built the exposure notifications system to enable public health authorities in their efforts to develop apps to help reduce the spread of the virus while ensuring people can trust in the privacy-preserving design. We are committed to supporting the government’s effort to launch an app based on this technology. Today’s launch marks an important step forward in our fight against this invisible killer and I urge everyone who can to download and use the app to protect themselves and their loved ones. The NHS COVID-19 app is a great addition to the safety measures already being put in by retailers. We hope it provides extra reassurance for customers and their families all across the country. As well as contact tracing, the app has a range of additional, enhanced features that will help to reduce personal and public risk from COVID-19 as part of the wider testing and contact tracing service: We are at a tipping point in our efforts to control the spread of this virus. With infection rates rising we must use every tool at our disposal to prevent transmission, including the latest technology. Notes to editorsMore information on the NHS COVID-19 appApp explainer video[App privacy video}(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCH__yEHa4s&)When someone reports symptoms through the app, it will detect any other app users that the person has been in close contact with over the past few days, including unknown contacts such as someone they may have sat next to on public transport. The app will be able to anonymously alert these contacts and provide advice, including how to get a test if they have symptoms. The mobile industry has committed to supporting the new app with the major operators Vodafone, Three, EE and O2 (including giffgaff and Tesco Mobile), Sky and Virgin, ‘zero-rating’ data charges for all in-app activity. This means customers will not be charged for data when using the in-app functions, or if they are directed out of the app to information on nhs.uk websites. If a customer is directed to other web pages outside of the app, this may use data from their allowance. The mobile industry welcomes the opportunity to support the government’s efforts to combat the global COVID-19 pandemic by zero-rating access to the new NHS COVID-19 app. Customers can be reassured that all in-app activity will not come out of their data allowance. Simon Thompson, Managing Director of the NHS COVID-19 App, said: alert: letting users know the level of coronavirus risk in their postcode district QR check-in: enabling users to check-in at a venue and alerting them if they have recently visited somewhere they may have come into contact with someone who later tests positive for COVID-19 symptoms: allowing users to check if they have coronavirus symptoms and see if they need to order a free test test: helping users book a free test through the app and get results to know whether they have COVID-19 isolate: if a user is told to self-isolate, a timer feature will help count down that period and access will be provided to relevant advice This new version is so much more than just a contact tracing app – it has a range of features which will quickly alert you if you’re at risk of coronavirus. The more people who use it, the better it works. Hamish MacLeod, Director at Mobile UK, said: People across England and Wales are being urged to download the NHS COVID-19 app to help control the spread of coronavirus and protect themselves and their loved ones as case numbers rise. The app launches today, and after positive trials and rigorous testing is an important new tool to work alongside traditional contact tracing to help reduce the spread of the virus. It will be available to those aged 16 and over in multiple languages. It forms a central part of the NHS Test and Trace service in England and the NHS Wales Test, Trace, Protect programme – identifying contacts of those who have tested positive for coronavirus. As part of a major campaign to encourage downloads of the app a new advertisement will launch on primetime TV tonight with the strapline ‘Protect your loved ones. Get the app.’Today the UK’s major mobile network operators, including Vodafone, Three, EE and O2, Sky and Virgin, have confirmed that all in-app activity will not come out of customers’ data allowance. The contact tracing element of the app works by using low-energy Bluetooth to log the amount of time you spend near other app users, and the distance between you, so it can alert you if someone you have been close to later tests positive for COVID-19 – even if you don’t know each other. The app will advise you to self-isolate if you have been in close contact with a confirmed case. It will also enable you to check symptoms, book a free test if needed and get your test results. The app has been designed with user privacy in mind, so it tracks the virus, not people and uses the latest in data security technology to protect privacy. The system generates a random ID for an individual’s device, which can be exchanged between devices via Bluetooth (not GPS). These unique random IDs regenerate frequently to add an extra layer of security and preserve anonymity. The app does not hold personal information such as your name, address or date of birth, and only requires the first half of your postcode to ensure local outbreaks can be managed. No personal data is shared with the government or the NHS.UK government Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said: We have worked extensively with tech companies, international partners, and privacy and medical experts – and learned from the trials – to develop an app that is secure, simple to use and will help keep our country safe.center_img We have worked tirelessly to develop the new NHS COVID-19 app and we are incredibly grateful to all residents of the Isle of Wight, London borough of Newham, and NHS volunteer responders, the learnings and insight have made the app what it is today. We are now ready to roll-out the app across England and Wales. I strongly encourage everyone in Wales to download and use the app to keep Wales safe. Wales’ Health and Social Services Minister, Vaughan Gething, said: In a joint statement Apple and Google said: We have worked closely with the app development team to ensure it works seamlessly across England and Wales, providing people with the right advice based on where they live. In Wales, the app will complement our existing contact tracing and testing services and will further support our co-ordinated response to COVID-19 at both a local and national level. NHS COVID-19 app launches nationwide to help control COVID-19 transmission alongside national and local contact tracing Features of the app include contact tracing using Bluetooth, risk alerts based on postcode district, QR check-in at venues, symptom checker and test booking – with user privacy and data security at its heart Businesses are now required by law to display the official NHS QR code posters from today so people can check-in at different premises with the app Helen Dickinson, Chief Executive of the British Retail Consortium, said: We want to make it as easy as possible for everyone to engage with England’s NHS Test and Trace service. The NHS COVID-19 app enables the majority of people with a smartphone to find out if they are at risk of having caught the virus and need to self isolate, order a test if they have symptoms, and access the right guidance and advice. From today certain businesses in England are required by law to display NHS Test and Trace QR codes so customers with the NHS COVID-19 app can use them to check-in. QR codes will help businesses meet their legal requirement to log contact details and allow public health leads to send alerts based on whether people have checked in at venues. So far, more than 160,000 businesses have already downloaded QR codes. Venues in Wales that are legally required to collect and keep a record of visitors will still need to do so.The NHS Test and Trace team behind the app has worked closely with major tech companies, including Google and Apple, scientists within the Alan Turing Institute and Oxford University, Zuhlke Engineering, medical experts, privacy groups, at-risk communities and teams in countries across the world using similar apps – such as Germany, to develop an app that is safe, simple and secure. The app has been through successful trials in the Isle of Wight, Newham and among NHS volunteer responders. Lessons learned have informed the final version that is launching today.Dido Harding, Executive Chair of England’s NHS Test and Trace Programme, said: This is a welcome step in protecting those around us. The launch of the NHS COVID-19 app is an important part of Wales’ coronavirus response, bolstering our Test, Trace, Protect programme. The more people who download and use this app, the more it will help us to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Customers will need data in order to download the Test and Trace app initially, this cannot be zero-rated. In-app activity has been zero-rated by mobile operators. From the app, customers may be directed to nhs.uk websites, which have also been zero rated. However, if a user is passed from the app to websites on gov.uk, data charges will apply. O2, Three UK and Virgin Media have zero-rated the subdomain .gov.uk for registering a COVID-19 test A full list of compatible devices is available. Those who may not have access to the app, or the ability to use a smartphone should continue to use traditional contact tracing services provided by NHS Test and Trace or, NHS Wales Test, Trace, Protect.Find out more information about how businesses can prepare for the NHS COVID-19 app.last_img read more

Ray Clemence: Jurgen Klopp pays tribute after former Liverpool and England ‘keeper dies aged 72 | Football News

first_imgHis former Spurs team-mate Ossie Ardiles tweeted: “So, so sad to heard the news of Raymondo passing away. He was a great goalkeeper, wonderful companion, friend.“He battled this illness right until the very end. We will miss you. Rest in peace my friend.“My family and my thoughts and prayers go out to Vee, her family and friends.”Clemence later moved into coaching and spent 17 years as part of the backroom staff with the England team – whose players wore black armbands to commemorate him during their Nations League game in Belgium on Sunday night.Former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson said: “I’m really sorry for him and his family. As a player, he was one of the best ever. He was one of the foundation stones that so much of this club’s success was built on.“Our feeling in this moment is of course overwhelmingly sadness, but it is also appreciation. Our fans will remember with fondness an extraordinary player and a wonderful person who contributed so much to Liverpool Football Club.“He and his loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers. You’ll Never Walk Alone.”- Advertisement – Sir Kenny Dalglish also paid tribute, tweeting: “Clem was a fantastic team-mate and great to be around.“I will never forget how he helped me to settle in at Anfield. Our thoughts are with the Clemence family. It was an honour to know you and to get the chance to play with you.”As well as establishing himself as arguably Liverpool’s greatest ever goalkeeper, Clemence also enjoyed a long international career, winning 61 England caps over 11 years. However, he surely would have won many more were he not competing with Peter Shilton – who won a record 125 caps – for the No 1 shirt.Speaking to Sky News, Shilton said: “I always looked upon Ray as a real friend, and we were real rivals as well for 10 years altogether.“Ray’s been battling for quite a few years with his illness and I texted him when he was in hospital and he said, ‘I’m struggling a bit, Shilts’.“I said, ‘there’s an awful lot of people who want you to get better Ray,’ and he sent a thumbs up. He was a definite fighter but it’s a definite loss to the game.“The thing about Ray, he always kept his feet on the floor, he was a good lad, and really liked by everybody.“We always had a good laugh, and that was the thing about Ray, he had a good personality, a great character.“I started quite a while before as a professional and Ray came in a bit later. He had natural ability, reflexes, agility.“He’s up there will the best goalkeepers of all time.”Clemence left Liverpool to join Tottenham in 1981, going on to win another FA Cup and UEFA Cup before retiring in 1988 after suffering an Achilles injury. 1:00 “To work with him was fantastic. I was very keen to keep him as long as I was manager of England. He was positive, he was happy, he had good humour.“He was very skilful too as a goalkeeping coach. When I started the job, I asked him who was the best goalkeeper, and he chose sometimes. I trusted him 110 per cent.“He was a great man to me, not only on a professional level, but also a great man personally and we became close friends.”Fabio Capello also shared his memories of Clemence, saying: “Ray was a fantastic person and a good friend. He was a very important member of the England coaching staff, liked and respected by everyone.“When I first arrived in England, I remembered Ray as a brilliant goalkeeper with Liverpool, Tottenham and the national team. He was also an excellent goalkeeper coach.“A gentleman who had a great sense of humour. We often played golf together with Sir Trevor Brooking, which I always enjoyed.“I really appreciated his knowledge and loyal support while I was the England manager. He will be greatly missed. I would like to send my deepest condolences to all of Ray’s family.”last_img read more

Creating jobs, tackling climate change

first_img21 October 2011Climate change innovation is taking off in a big way in South Africa – as demonstrated by initiatives such as The Fresh Air Factory, a Durban-based community project that creates “green” products by recycling locally available materials.Through the project, based at the Eco Park in Durban’s Bluff area, a group of previously disadvantaged locals are being given the opportunity to earn money and acquire business skills by producing environmentally friendly products from recycled materials. One of the challenges for achieving climate change sustainability is getting local communities to respond in ways that will not only see their environments looked after, but will also create jobs, impart new skills, and help the community to prosper.Making new challenges work for peopleMiller Matola, CEO of Brand South Africa, says success stories such as The Fresh Air Factory demonstrate the commitment of South Africans to making new challenges, such as climate change, work for them through innovation and entrepreneurship.“The project is established as a community factory that produces green products from recycled and locally available materials,” says Matola. “At the same time, participants are taught skills for their own future business ventures.“It’s a showcase illustrating how local economic development can be achieved, and this is through community participation, skills development and being creative with the resources that are available.”The products made at The Fresh Air Factory are targeted for corporate gifting through the co-ordination of Little Green Gifts and Packaging, and the factory is open to the public – allowing visitors to see firsthand what is being made from the recycled waste.Focus on human resource developmentAntoinette Kruger of Little Green Gifts and Packaging says her business is keen to support The Fresh Air Factory initiative, along with various other similar projects around South Africa. However, she adds, that the downfall of many community projects is quality control, and the fact that large orders cannot always be met.Because of this, The Fresh Air factory is being developed as a pilot project with an eye to franchising. “The aim is to have a network of Fresh Air Factories, so that the greater quantities of products often required by retailers and corporates can be produced,” says Kruger. An additional component to the success of the project is that it moves away from focusing on capital development to focusing on human resource development – therefore increasing the platforms for skills transfer and employment.“Every South African should play their part in dealing with climate change, and the people of the Bluff are showing the value that comes from collective effort,” says Matola.“Projects like The Fresh Air Factory link those who were previously disadvantaged into the real and active economy, and allow for increased participation and production in local markets, as well as sustainable job creation.”SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Amajimbos defeat Nigeria to make CAF Youth final

first_img26 February 2015The Amajimbos, the South African national under-17 team, sailed into the final of the 2015 CAF u17 African Youth Championships with a 1-0 win over Nigeria in Niamey, Niger, on Wednesday afternoon. It was a solid performance from the South Africans, and a goal from mercurial goal- poacher Khanyisa Mayo was all the Amajimbos needed to overcome probably their biggest obstacle on their way to being crowned the African champions.HungryBoth teams had already sealed their place at the World Cup in Chile and started the match at a high tempo. It was the South Africans who looked hungrier to win the match.Mbatha started the attack for Amajimbos as early as the third minute of the game but his shot did little to trouble the Nigerians. When the Amajimbos went on the attack in the 26th minute, Mayo swept home the single crucial goal.Tight defenceNigeria came back a rejuvenated side in the second half, pushing for the elusive equaliser. However, a combination of good goalkeeping from Mpoto and tight defence put paid to any of their chances pulling things back.Amajimbos coach Molefi Ntseki was over the moon about the victory – but said he was not surprised by the outcome.“We watched Nigeria throughout the tournament, because there was a chance of us playing them. We identified a lot of mistakes in their game and this victory was down to our homework and our players playing to instructions. Nigeria are a good team, make no mistake about that, but this is a culmination of our plans coming together,” said Ntseki. The South Africans will face the victor of Thursday’s semi-final, when Mali and Guinea face off. The final is scheduled for Sunday.By reaching the semi-finals, all four countries qualified for the Fifa U-17 World Cup, taking place in Chile from 17 October 17 to 8 November.South African u17 starting line-up: Mondli Mpoto, Katlego Mohamme, Keanu Cupido, Reeve Frosler, Notha Ngcobo, Thendo Mukumela, Athenkosi Dlala, Sibongakonke Mbatha, Nelson Maluleke (c), Luvuyo Mkatshana, Khanyisa Mayo.Source: South African Football Associationlast_img read more

India in South Africa: Team India does not need to panic, says Sourav Ganguly

first_imgIndia have plenty to ponder over this week after their defeat to South Africa in the first Test in Cape Town but Sourav Ganguly has backed the Virat Kohli-led side does not need to panic. While the Indian pacers always kept the team in a winning position throughout the game, it was the batsmen who failed to deliver on a seamer-friendly Newlands track.India were bundled out for 135 in their second innings while chasing 208 a run less than what they had scored in the first innings. South Africa took a crucial first lead of 77 and scored 130 to set India a tricky target.India blew their chance in Cape Town and the challenge is going to be only stiffer up in Centurion for the second Test and Johannesburg for the third Test. South Africa won’t have Dale Steyn in their ranks but they have enough firepower to go with Vernon Philander, Morne Morkel and Kagiso Rabada. In fact, they might even contemplate adding an extra batsman to the line-up after the way India’s pacers bowled this week.”India will play five bowlers because the problem is not with your fifth bowler batting option. The problem is with your top and middle order batting options. Hardik Pandya played magnificently despite the fact that he went to South Africa without much of match practice. You cannot go in a Test match without a spinner so that chapter closes. Ravichandran Ashwin also got you 30 runs with the bat. The problem is not fast bowling, the problem is not Hardik Pandya, the problem is not Ashwin. The problem is your top-order batsmen,” Ganguly told India Today.advertisementWATCH FULL SHOWAn in-form Rohit Sharma was preferred over the tried, tested and successful Ajinkya Rahane, who has proven himself time and again in testing overseas condition.”History of Rohit Sharma and history of Shikhar Dhawan in overseas conditions are not very good. You look at their records, it’s like chalk and cheese when they go away and when they are in India. So you are basically depending on Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli as the two best performers in overseas conditions. Look at Cheteshwar Pujara. His 13 of 14 Test hundreds have come in subcontinent conditions. I keep saying about KL Rahul because he has scored runs in Australia, he has scored runs in West Indies and Sri Lanka. It’s not just about form, it’s also about where people score runs. But let’s not panic too much. I was not surprised by the result. I have tremendous regard for Virat Kohli and we will see an improved performance in the next game,” Ganguly added. Many believe it was a gutsy call by coach Ravi Shastri and Kohli but the reality is that Rohit failed to deliver on the big stage.Rohit showed good temperament during the first innings and saw off the first hour of the second day’s play but was trapped plumb in front of his wickets for a painstaking 11 from 59 balls.Rahane averages 53.44 in overseas conditions, including Sri Lanka, West Indies and Bangladesh while his average in South Africa rises to 69.66 from four innings.Decision to drop Rahane was bold but it backfired. Kohli, who has never fielded the same XI in consecutive Tests, may bring back the Mumbai batsman for the second Test as India seek fresh start at Centurion.”I don’t think Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri will change the team straightaway. There is a possibility that one of them (Ajinkya Rahane or KL Rahul) may come back. It could be Ajinkya Rahane in the middle in place of Rohit Sharma and there’s a possibility of KL Rahul coming at top of the order. India will have to bottle down and fight hard in the batting. The wicket in Centurion will be quick as well. It will have a lot more bounce than Cape Town. It may not seam as much as Cape Town but it will be lot quicker,” he said. However, Ganguly said he will give Rohit another chance and will bring in KL Rahul in place Shikhar Dhawan for the second Test.”I would actually play five bowlers and play KL Rahul in place of Shikhar Dhawan. Rahul because he has done well in overseas conditions. I would give Rohit Sharma one more opportunity. I wouldn’t tinker with the bowling line-up. All the batters have not scored runs. There’s not been a single fifty from the order. You got to put this behind and try and comeback stronger in the next Test. Preparation is important and India have lost a bit there and faced not much of criticism. So India will have to fight their way into the next match,” Ganguly said.advertisementIndia’s top five combined for 130 runs in the match as compared to South Africa’s 234 by their top-five batsmen, courtesy two half-centuries in the first innings.India’s top order was among runs prior to the series but those runs were scored in India and conditions similar to sub-continent pitches in the West Indies and Sri Lanka.India’s top five will have to pull their socks up in the remaining two matches and reignite the spark to have a shot at at least drawing the series if not winning.last_img read more
