Massive response of Greek workers to attack on the eight-hour day

first_imgFor the past month, Greek workers have been protesting the right-wing New Democracy government’s attempt to enshrine a 10-hour work day into law — as well as serious restrictions on the right to strike and other rights workers have won over decades of struggle. New Democracy has justified these attacks as being the only possible response to creditors’ demands for more austerity, based on Greece’s external debt being 205% of its GDP.Athens, May 27. Credit: Greek Communist Party. The government proposal, reflecting what is current workplace practice in Greece, would allow employers to force workers to accept comp time in lieu of overtime pay.The Greek Communist Party (KKE) and the All Workers Militant Front (PAME) organized the rally in Athens at Syntagma Square. It drew tens of thousands of workers, including “self-employed” and unemployed people, students and pensioners, to protest this bill.KKE General Secretary Dimitris Koutsoumbas ended with the message: “We refuse to become slaves in the 21st century! The monstrous antilabor law must not be submitted!” Earlier he pointed out, “The working class, the people, have no other choice but to respond to the war with war — with their own weapons: the broad information campaign, the organization, the unwavering class struggle, their righteous demands, the overthrow of this dark situation.” (tinyurl.com/rrkayzum)Besides Athens, there were major demonstrations in Greece’s second largest city Thessaloníki, Patras, Ioannina, Volos, Trikala, Katerini and Livadia.FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thisFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thislast_img read more

Japanese man’s COVID-19 case raises concerns about Indonesia’s detection ability

first_imgA Japanese national has reportedly tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus after visiting Indonesia, raising concerns about the country’s ability to detect carriers of the deadly virus.Because of this incident, Indonesian authorities are being urged to take swift actions to prevent its spread.Bayu Krisnamurthi, who headed the National Committee for Avian Flu Control and Pandemic Preparedness between 2006 and 2010, said the Japanese man could have transmitted the virus to others in Indonesia through droplets expelled by coughs and sneezes. “The health authorities should quickly clarify this case. It should be assumed that the virus could have been contracted by someone else before the symptoms appeared,” Bayu told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.Previously, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported that the Japanese man was in his 60s, lived in Tokyo and worked at a senior care facility. The man visited a healthcare facility in Japan on Feb. 12 after developing “cold-like symptoms” but was sent home after he was not diagnosed with pneumonia. He then worked on Feb. 13, spent Feb. 14 at home and reportedly traveled to Indonesia on a family vacation on Feb. 15.The NHK report did not specify the man’s itinerary while in Indonesia. The man returned to Japan on Feb. 19 and was soon hospitalized for having severe difficulty in breathing. He was said to be in “serious condition”.Separately, the Tokyo Novel Coronavirus Infectious Disease Control Center of the Tokyo Metropolitan government’s website confirmed that a Tokyo resident in his 60s had tested positive for the disease and that his symptoms appeared on Feb. 12.The release does not mention any travel history to Indonesia, only that the man had not been to China within the previous 14 days. The patient’s condition was listed as serious. The man was the 29th case of COVID-19 recorded in Tokyo.Meanwhile, the Indonesian Health Ministry’s disease control and environment health directorate general secretary, Achmad Yurianto, said the ministry had contacted the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Tokyo to seek confirmation about the Japanese man, but his identity remained unknown.“We neither know his name nor which part of Indonesia [he visited]. So what can we investigate?” Yurianto told the Post on Sunday.Foreign Ministry acting spokesperson Teuku “Faiz” Faizasyah said that there had been no official communication with the Japanese authorities about the man.The Post tried to contact the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo by phone on Sunday, but the line only responded with an answering machine message saying to contact the embassy during business hours.“That’s the problem: Up until now there has been no information yet from Japan,” Yurianto said.Airports across the country are using thermal scanners to detect persons who have contracted the coronavirus and are requiring international arrival passengers to provide health documents in the form of general declarations. Airlines must also provide passenger manifests to officials in the health office. However, people with no health concerns on arrival might not show detectable signs of previous exposure to the coronavirus.“We could not possibly check them all, including their phlegm,” Yurianto said. Moreover, Bayu Krisnamurthi said the authorities should have already known the proper procedures for a virus outbreak, as there had been previous cases including the avian flu, the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), among others. He said the authorities should at least update the public daily about the coronavirus so people can get accurate and useful information since viruses mutate.“Citizens should also be persuaded to take preventive measures: wash hands, wear masks when sick with influenza, eat well-balanced nutritious food and, if needed, take some vitamins to increase the body’s immunity,” he said.Meanwhile, Amin Soebandrio, the director of the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology, said that if the Japanese man showed no symptoms during his stay in Indonesia he could remain undetected despite already carrying the virus during the incubation period. The coronavirus’ incubation period is up to 14 days.“This is not just in Indonesia. [The man would be undetected] in any country if no symptoms show before he returned to Japan,” Amin told the Post.Amin said that persons infected with the virus during the incubation period could theoretically spread the virus, although they would not necessarily do so if they did not show any symptoms.“If the person already has the symptoms then he can [spread the virus],” Amin said.Amin said that the Indonesian government had followed proper procedures as according to the World Health Organization, including requiring health cards and quarantine travelers recently coming to China.“So the problem is not in our ability to detect [the coronavirus] or not because we have all the measures,” Amin said. The case is the second time a patient tested positive for COVID-19 after a visit to Indonesia. The first, a Chinese man identified as Jin, tested positive with the virus earlier this month, eight days after returning from Bali.According to the Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE), as of Sunday evening (Jakarta time), there were 78,823 confirmed cases globally, most of whom were in China where the virus has killed 2,437 people.Outside of mainland China, a total 1,887 cases has been confirmed in 31 countries, including Hong Kong and Macau, resulting in 20 deaths.Japan had 135 confirmed cases with one dead, according to Johns Hopkins CSSE.A total of 23,364 people had recovered from the disease worldwide.Topics :last_img read more

Murphy Gives Green Light to Non-Essential Construction, Retail

first_imgAnd while Murphy says the state is “confident” that it can maintain its social distancing standards through these next steps, New Jersey is “still not in the endzone” in defeating the virus. To help get there, the state outlined a contact tracing program on Tuesday to reach out to individuals who may have been exposed to the virus. By Allison Perrine “All safety protocols mustbe clearly posted at the jobsite so workers will knowthat their health and safetyis priority number one,” saidMurphy. The announcements come as trends show that since the peak of the virus, from April 10 through 15, new hospitalizations are down 65 percent, from 409 cases April 10 to 301 cases May 12. The total number of hospitalizations are down 48 percent, from 6,391 April 15 to 4,250 May 12. And patients in intensive care units and on ventilators are both down “significantly,” said Murphy, dropping 37 percent and 42 percent, respectively. On Wednesday, Murphy announced that he will allow the restart of nonessential construction and the opening of nonessential retail stores for curbside pickup only, effective Monday at 6 a.m. He is also permitting drive-thru and drive-in events to take place under social distancing guidelines, effective immediately. This permits drive-in movie screenings or religious services as long as individuals remain in their vehicles. The concept of the program is not new to the state, the governor added, as it has been utilized during “other efforts” to battle communicable diseases. The only thing that differs, he said, is the scope and the scale of the program. “In other words, we’re going to have to use contact tracing unlike its ever been deployed before.” “We’re moving slowly and deliberately because any misstep risks further outbreaks,” said the governor. “If we transpose public health and economic health, or if we jump the gun, it is quite clear experts from all persuasions in New Jersey… and in the United States and in the world will tell you that you risk reigniting this fire.” NEW JERSEY – Gov. Phil Murphy has preached that “public health creates economic health” and that “data determines dates” on when he will reopen the state. Now, as public health and data continue to improve showing fewer COVID-19 infections, the governor is easing some social distancing restrictions and executive orders. On April 6 when the state first shared its worst projections, officials were preparing for more than 36,000 hospitalizations, 9,000 ICU patients and 7,500 patients on ventilators. But thanks to social distancing efforts of New Jersey residents, that “never really came close,” said Murphy. As of Wednesday, the total number of positive COVID-19 cases statewide is 141,560, with 9,702 total deaths. Additionally, Murphy said that April revenue collections for the state are down nearly 60 percent compared to last April, an unprecedented $3.5 billion, due to the virus shut-downs. ALLISON PERRINE Sandy Hook reopened to the public Saturday, May 9, and locals are now encouraged to enjoy the nice weather while adhering to social distancing mandates. “We are beginning thecareful process of restartingour economy and getting ourstate on the road back,” saidMurphy. Once construction sites reopen Monday, workers will be required to wear face coverings and employers must prevent overcrowding on the site and prohibit nonessential visitors. Employers will also be required to stagger work hours and breaks and ensure proper sanitation protocols are being adhered to. Looking ahead to potential next steps for reopening the state, Murphy said he and state Health Commissioner Judy Persichilli are working with doctors and hospitals throughout the state to develop a responsible plan to reopen facilities for elective surgeries. He hopes to announce the plan in the coming days. “Testing on its own is notenough. We also have to havethe infrastructure in place tofully follow up on those tests, and to reach out to those whomay have been exposed toCOVID-19 by someone whotests positive in the future,”said Murphy. The article originally appeared in the May 14 – 20, 2020 print edition of The Two River Times.last_img read more

AMERICAN LAWYER WHO MOVED TO DONEGAL TO GET AWAY FROM IT ALL SET TO CREATE JOBS HERE

first_imgRussell SmithAN AMERICAN lawyer who moved to live in Malin Head to get away from the hustle and bustle of New York says he hopes to open a new legal office in Co Donegal.Russell Smith walked out on his life in the Big Apple, and went searching for a new life on the west coast of Ireland. He stopped at Malin Head, warmed to the locals – and they to him – and now wants to put something back. He eventually returned to the law and now runs one of the biggest entertainment and legal firms – with plans for 75 jobs in Derry. But Mr Smith says he is hoping to open a second office – in Letterkenny.““I planned to be somewhere remote (in Malin Head) but people kept knocking on the door and I found myself doing more socialising than I would ever have done back in New York,” he says.Almost 19 years after moving here his own legal and media firm works for HBO, Sasha Baron Cohen, Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox , Channel Four Television and former President Bill Clinton. Smith says his company SmithDehn is close to choosing its Derry offices but he says the firm may also now open a second office in Letterkenny. It’s thought the CoLab at LYIT is one of the options under consideration.Taoiseach Enda Kenny cut the sod on a major expansion of the CoLab two months ago.Attracting a company like SmithDehn to Letterkenny would be a major jobs boost – but also a major boost to the growing Tech and Media sector in the town. AMERICAN LAWYER WHO MOVED TO DONEGAL TO GET AWAY FROM IT ALL SET TO CREATE JOBS HERE was last modified: July 30th, 2014 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:donegalletterkennyMalin Headrussell SmithSmithDehnlast_img read more

Investment in SA leaps 400%

first_imgConstruction at Orlando Stadium in Soweto in preparation for the 2010 Fifa World Cup. Infrastructure development ahead of the tournament is one driver in the massive rise in mergers and acquisitions activity in the country.Mary AlexanderWith deals worth R82-billion (US$10.4-billion), foreign direct investment (FDI) in South Africa surged 400% in 2007, up from R18-billion ($2.3-billion) in 2006, according to the Ernst & Young Mergers & Acquisitions Review 2007.Released on Tuesday 11 March, the report reveals that much of this growth was spurred by investment from other emerging economies.“This trend was signified by the largest transaction of the year, the sale of a 20% stake in the Standard Bank group to the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China,” says Dave Thayser, director for Ernst & Young transaction advisory services.Approved by 95% of shareholders in December 2007 and valued at R36.5-billion ($4.6-billion), the Chinese bank’s investment is a serial record-breaker. It’s the largest FDI in South Africa, the largest in Africa, and the largest, globally, by a Chinese bank. Not quite at the level of the Commercial Bank of China deal, but by no means small, the other driver of the 400% FDI inflow was the R25-billion ($3.2-billion) acquisition by Bain Capital, a multinational private-equity group, of South Africa’s Edcon. With CNA, Boardmans, Red Square, Jet and other brands under its belt, Edcon is one of South Africa’s leading retail groups.Ernst & Young’s Sean McPhee said international investors looking for higher yields found emerging economies a good bet. “We are encountering more and more foreign private equity groups that find the South African market attractive,” he said.“This stems from the growth our market is experiencing, access to resource-rich Africa, and the opportunities in infrastructure development.”Mergers, acquisitions and empowermentThe record FDI growth is seen as the main factor behind the 51.1% rise in total mergers and acquisitions (M&A) value in South Africa in 2007. Hitting another historic South African record, the year saw the signing of M&A deals worth R514-billion ($65-billion), with the top ten valued at R208.1-billion ($26.3-billion).Ernst & Young attributes much of this growth to black economic empowerment (BEE), which tends to encourage both the dissolution of traditional corporate structures and dynamic M&A deal-making. Empowerment deals jumped 71% in 2007 to R96-billion ($12.1-billion), another record. For every R100-million spent on a merger, some R20-million was spent on BEE.“M&A transactions constitute one of the dimensions of BEE and it consequently has become an important, perhaps crucial, aspect of M&A activity over the past few years,” said Thayser. One reason for the rise in BEE deals was the final publication of the Department of Trade and Industry’s Codes of Good Practice in 2007, which brought much-needed clarity to empowerment activity.Head of BEE at Ernst & Young, Sugan Palanee, said codes required companies to review their plans because they required less emphasis on equity ownership as the first priority. Other aspects of BEE, such as black participation in business and procurement from black business, have become more important.Infrastructure development and 2010Another driver was South Africa’s massive infrastructure development drive ahead of the 2010 Fifa Football World Cup. One of the largest BEE deals of the year, worth R7.6-billion ($961-million), was the sale of a substantial stake in cement company Holcim to the Afrisam BEE consortium. According to the latest Business Monitor International (BMI) infrastructure report, the South African construction industry has seen impressive growth in the last few years, with much potential for future expansion.“The forthcoming 2010 Fifa Football World Cup is expected to provide a tremendous boost to infrastructure development in the country,” said Thayser. “BMI expects the industry to grow at 6.14% during 2008 to 2012.”In 2007 many more construction-sector firms listed on the JSE, South Africa’s stock exchange, than in the previous year.“Once listed, the first thing many companies embark upon is bedding down one or more acquisitions, which are often important for the company to move from being a regional to a national player,” says John Wetton, Director at Ernst & Young “Reasons for consolidation are numerous, but one of the primary drivers of this trend is the increased complexity of the business environment.”Consolidation between existing players also became apparent, as well as deals intended to diversify the interests of existing players. The largest example during 2007 was the decision of the Royal Bafokeng Holdings to buy short term insurance company Mutual and Federal for R8-billion ($1-billion).“The private equity sector continued in 2007 where it left off in 2006,” said Thayser. “In the latter year, we reported that private equity had come of age in South Africa, with a number of major deals having been announced as well as record activity evident in funding.”This rapid growth has also brought with it greater shareholder assertiveness. “The feature of 2007 was a rise in shareholder activism broadly defined, or at least an apparent rise due to an appreciable increase in the volume of the verbal interplay,” said Thayser. “Three deals in 2007 really cemented the extraordinary power of institutional shareholders in SA and their increasing propensity to use this influence.”These deals were the bid by furniture and transport company Steinhoff for furniture retailer JD Group, the bid for Rainbow by conglomerate Remgro and Brait’s private equity bid for Shoprite.Thayser was reasonably confident in South Africa’s M&A prospects for 2008. “Pipelines of listings and private equity transactions remain strong and private local equity companies remain flush with cash,” he said. “Overall, confidence seems high that the South African economy will proceed modestly this year and M&A overall will be down – but not out.”Related articlesSouth Africa’s economyBlack economic empowermentInfrastructure developmentUseful linksErnst & Young South AfricaDepartment of Trade and IndustryIndustrial and Commercial Bank of ChinaStandard BankBain CapitalEdconlast_img read more
